Applied Thesis Course: Final Course Project

After completion of the required core courses for the Diploma program, students choose the topic of their final course. This gives students the opportunity to focus in an area of professional interest. There are now two options to meet this requirement.

Options:

  1. Students may enroll in an elective course related to an area of personal or professional interest.
Choose from the following list of electives:
    Career Planning and Development
    Life Skills Coaching
    Multi-Cultural Competence
    Spiritual/Faith-Based Counselling
    Ethics and Career Development
    Advanced Skill Development/Final Project:
    Administrative Assistant Counselling Assistant
    Course Facilitation Assistant
Case Management in Applied Skills IV - Practicum
    Probation, Parole & Rehabilitation
    Cinematherapy
    Community-Based Counselling parts 1&2
    Solution-focused Counselling

  2. Students may enroll in the Applied Thesis Course: Under the supervision of an instructor or mentor, students develop a career-related proposal that incorporate concepts and skills learned throughout the program. This project serves as a measure of the student's ability to apply theory, research, and clinical skills. Proposals are evaluated by the instructor for practical relevance and professionalism.

Get creative in an area of personal or professional interest. The scope and type of project is up to each student… develop a workshop, intervention or outreach program, fundraising project, etc. Here are just a few areas to choose from:
    Addictions… prevention or recovery support,
    Depression or anxiety disorders
Intervention planning for victims of abuse or trauma
Marital enrichment or conflict resolution training,
    Parenting
    Suicide prevention
Developmental issues for youth, adults, or the elderly
    Loss and grief
    Cultural diversity

The thesis proposal is a valuable addition to graduates' portfolio of clinical skills, as it reflects current employment trends in the mental health field.
