Program Description:
The Certificate of Applied Counselling Studies with a specialization in Personal
Support Counselling explores the major personality theories and techniques used
to assist clients who are experiencing mild to moderate emotional or behavioral
concerns. Students identify the stages of individual and group counselling and
ethical considerations; and remaining within the scope of practice of support
counsellors. Skill development includes: interview and assessment procedures;
empathetic listening skills, making referrals to other professionals; case management:
treatment planning; goal setting; crisis interventions; overcoming resistance;
and use of integrative counselling techniques
